Five Star Billionaire A Novel Tash Aw Books

This is the first of Tash Aws books I have read and Hopefully one of many more to come. The book provides a very contemporary glimpse into present day life in Asia. Although I have only travelled and stayed in large Asian cities, I imagine this novel is an accurate reflection of modern life in Shanghai. It provides thoughtful, sensitive observations about the complex and confusing nature of modern relationships, our need for privacy and its unavoidable side effect of loneliness and isolation. Family expectations and obligations, business and the small personal pleasures which often outweigh the glitter of success. He has perfectly balanced a group of disparate characters and bound them into a whole, delicate network of human connections. It left me feeling sad for our loss of family and community strength but hopeful, as the resilient and ever hopeful nature of people triumphs over the seemingly unstoppable pace of economic change and growth. This book is about our future in an Asian century.

Five Star Billionaire A Novel Tash Aw Books Reviews

Well written. Gives some insight into the struggles of young Chinese as they claw their way into the middle class. As Aw sees it there is some resemblance between China today and the US in the late 1940's-1960. Great growth, acquisition of stuff and not too much introspection. Also Aw writes with a superb sense of humor. I somehow did not expect that kind of humor from a Chinese writer.
Reminds me of some of our iconic writers who used character types to create and understanding of the American psyche.
This is a most unusual book. At first, I felt disconnected and had a hard time knowing which character was who. Then, as I got into the plot? I began to try my hand at forecasting what was going to happen.I didn't do so well. Aw did a MUCH better job of interconnecting stories than I could have.
I bought this book on a friend's recommendation. Didn't quite look the title so took a while to start it. Oh boy did I enjoy it! I read a lot of books on modern China and this one is the most spot on, most truthful, and most entertaining since Peter Hessler. Even though the book focuses on five Malaysian Chinese characters, their stories are very much about the Wild Wild East of China. Shanghai, as other reviewers have mentioned, is quite the center of the storytelling. As someone who lived in Beijing from 2004-2012, I find the author's depiction of urban life in big Chinese cities extremely detailed and authentic. The slow weaving of the characters' stories is especially enjoyable. The language drags a little sometimes, but the characters are so compelling that you stay with the book.

Highly recommend for someone who would like to get more emotional feel of China's new gold rush.
Tash Aw is Malaysian, and writes beautiful English prose. This book is about several characters, who once lived in Malaysia, but are all now doing various things in Shanghai, China. In a lot of ways, it's a book about contemporary Shanghai. It's a great read, but I found the ending of the book lacking with a lot of unresolved issues for each of the characters.
I loved the exotic settings, descriptions of the world's most important mega-city and its cultures. Unfortunately, the book loses steam 1/3 of the way through. The conflicts take way too long to develop. In short it's kinda boring.
I really enjoyed the insights this book gave me into the the lives and thoughts of young people in China. The characters are rich and poor with interesting back stories, and their interactions give the book, and society as a whole, life. Progress is disruptive and Five Star Billionaire gives us an idea of how some of the people affected by progress might act, and why. Sometimes I almost wanted to reach in to the book and give the characters a shake and change their self destructive patterns, but of course, I was as unable as they were to effect their own lives in a positive way.

The book is an entertaining read. I recommend it.
I found "Five-Star Billionaire" difficult to read. I felt that the writing style was necessary for the tome of the book, but often found it stilted. The characters were well-developed, with considerable backstory in some cases. The ending was both predictable and disappointing. Loose ends were tied up to some extent, but I felt that the author was just done because even though what occurred to one of the characters was predictable, it wasn't explained. Essentially, while it become quite clear that one of the characters had a vendetta against another character, the 'revenge' was taken upon a third character.
