A YesorNo Answer Jane Shore 9780547006031 Books

I had the pleasure of meeting Jane Shore (and her husband , author Howard Norman) last summer. First, let me say that she is the nicest, most collaborative poet I've met. I bought the book on a whim, figuring if she put in the effort to go to a workshop and speak about her poems, she at least deserved to sell a copy. Christ, writing is hard, and writers, even mediocre ones deserve to sell some books.

I was pleasantly surprised, then, to find that her poetry is accessible, interesting, fun, and insightful. There's nothing abstract in her writing, none of the painful vagaries of poets for whom words are mere brushstrokes dipped in water, hastening a discoloration on the page and not much more. With Jane Shore, you get vivid lines, brushstrokes bold and resolute, passionate and bright, dark and moody. She's got it all, and always a story, always a connection to the reader, a universal spark.

Well done, Mrs. Shore, well-done.

Poetry either expands the boundaries of my world, bringing me in touch with my core self, the way I navigate imagination in search of insight and inspiration. In Jane Shore's A Yes-or-No Answer, I am drawn back into that charmed circle of woman-mother-child connections that bridges generations past and present, the profound relationships that shape our responses to the world.

From the "make love not war" 60s to the painful observations of middle age, Shore addresses family, now and then, her Jewish childhood in New Jersey and the precious fragments of a mother-daughter relationship that drifts into her consciousness, the trembling vitality that remains long after the loss of a beloved parent

"Wearing her baby-blue nylon nightgown,
not the muslin shroud we buried her in,
my mother stands before my closet, puzzled.
Why are her dresses mingling with mine?
------
Yet her eyes seem to be begging me
to help her, help her slip back again
into the shackles of clothes."
(The Closet)

In sharp contrast to those faded garments and sepia-tinged photographs of the past, the poet's daughter steps into her own bright light of the future, dragging a reluctant mother in her wake

"Reading the diary I kept when I was twelve,
my twelve-year-old feels entitled to the girl
I used to be, my past's her private property.
------
God, Mom, you were such a baby!
Shaking her head, she turns the page."
(My Daughter Reads My Old Diary)

My favorite poem in the collection is evocative of a loving childhood, subtly aware of a chaotic world scarred by jarring inequity

"Every morning, I unbend
their wire limbs and lay them
back in their tiny box where
they sleep all day like vampires.
------
until, like the Disappeared,
they'll all vanish without a trace,
leaving me to worry all alone
in bed with their empty coffin."
(Trouble Dolls)

Beautiful phrasing and evocative images define this collection, a stirring of latent memory, words that link an intense appreciation of family with the challenges of a changing world. In a book of poems as familiar and comforting as a tattered family album or songs on a scratchy long-playing record, Shore is one of those rare women who speaks to all, who celebrates her history, her present and an unknowable future with grace and courage.
